A foundation that is run by George Soros is helping to fund the Yes 4 Minneapolis initiative, which is seeking to replace the Minneapolis Police Department. An arm of George Soros’ Open Society Foundations, the Open Society Policy Center, donated $500,000 to Yes 4 Minneapolis. The Star Tribune reported, “On Nov. 5, the executive director of Local Progress e-mailed Council President Lisa Bender, introducing her to Gretchen Rohr, who was leading a team at the Open Society Foundations working on justice-related programs in Minneapolis.” Local Progress, a national group that’s goal is to help progressive politicians share their ideas, is also funded in part by George Soros’ organization.
The groups also all met together virtually in February for discussion. Those who were there included “council members, people from the Open Society Foundations, Black Visions Collective co-executive director Kandace Montgomery and Sheila Nezhad, an activist with Reclaim the Block who is running for mayor.” Black Visions and Reclaim the Block are both part of the Yes 4 Minneapolis coalition.
As reported by The Minnesota Sun, Yes 4 Minneapolis is seeking to replace the police force with a community-led effort. According to Yes 4 Minneapolis, they are “a black-led, multiracial campaign composed of a growing coalition of grassroots, community organizations and individuals who believe a people’s petition is the best path forward for implementing a new Department of Public Safety in Minneapolis.”
The question that Yes 4 Minneapolis is proposing to have on the Minneapolis ballot in November reads, “Shall the Charter be amended to create a Department of Public Safety that employs a comprehensive public health approach with a range of strategies and personnel, including licensed peace officers as necessary, to fulfill responsibilities for community safety, with the general nature of the amendments being briefly indicated in the explanatory note below, which is made a part of this ballot?”
